Central to the imagery on this lovely panel is a quite realistic face done in brilliant red, with hair in blue and protruding eyes highlighted in yellow, blue and white. Panels made for devotees of the deity Oshun (goddess of medicinal waters), are closely associated with the safeguarding of children. Red symbolizes Oshun's connection with orisha Shango, to whom she was married according to Yoruba mythology. Surrounding the visage are two pairs of a figure-eight configurations interwoven in an array of shades. At the top and bottom are long horizontal registers in a checkerboard pattern alternating blue, white and red. This arrangement balances cool with warm colors, in the way negative forces are balanced with positive to create perfect harmony. The calm of the face is in contrast to its fiery coloration, further emphasizing the power to unite opposing forces into a state of equilibrium; which in Yoruba belief, is the key to understanding life.
