This antique intaglio has been set in an modern 18 karat gold ring.
An eagle stands on an elevated ground line, its claws pointed straight down as if the bird is about to take flight. The eagle's neck and head are twisted with the sharp beak encircled by notches like a type of wreath. There are tw Roman military standards at both ends either intended to be at a distance or smaller than the eagle. Every permanent camp of a Roman military unit contained a chapel in which was held the statues of gods, the emperors and the standards of the unit; all receiving quasi-divine honors at appropriate limes. Eagles were an important element of the standards, anointed and tended on feast days. On this intaglio the eagle is given precedence as symbol of strength, beauty and independence.
