This intaglio is set is a 24 karat gold ring.
Classical Revival engravers, who catered to an educated elite well versed in ancient art, were usually quite accurate replicating c1assical images. Though this attractive young man does Dot wear a diadem or laurel wreath, he was most probably connected with an imperial family. He may De Caius or Lucius Caesar, sons of Agrippa and Julia, who would have succeeded Emperor Augustus (reigned 27 B.C. - A.D. 14) if not for their early deaths (4 A.D. and 2 A.D. respectively). Another young man who nearly reached the imperial throne was Diadumenian the son of Emperor Macrinus (217 - 218 A.D.), whose charming face and curly hair is similar to the image on this intaglio. Marcus Aurelius (161 - 180 A.D.) may also be a contender, though he is usually shown wearing a beard. This fine engraving, nonetheless, displays the bloom of youth and hope of this young man, whoever be may be.
