This vessel, resembling a turkey, has a bulbous incised neck, a sharply curved open beak and large appliquéd eyes. Striated horizontal extensions on the sides serve both as wings and handles, as does the short tail. The wide rimmed bowl rests on three conical shaped legs that are decorated with incised vertical lines. Vertical appliquéd bands on the head, incised with a series of small holes, gives the impression of a turkey's knobby skin, with added texture of fine holes stippled over the eyes and the final touch of a short extension or crest on the top of the head. The phase of ceramics known as Guinea Incised utilized the technique of incising and appliqués, often producing vessels in the form of animals and birds excelling in a delightful combination of realism and abstraction.
