Masks are one type of sculpture that can be enjoyed by all. Their appeal is universal and immediate. Either displayed on a wall or worn during ceremonies, they are often given expressive treatment. In this fine example, there is remarkable detail. The hair is finely incised to form an elaborate style with “peaks” rising from the forehead, ending in attractive curls at the chin. Checkerboard designs on the cheeks signify tattooing or scarification. Tracings of white chalk or pigment perfectly highlight the features. The face may originally have been entirely white, reminiscent of the famous white masks of the Fang tribe. There are some faces, both in reality and in art, that have an immediate charm.
