This wooden mask with fibrous framework is an unusual form which can be identified to the Urhobo people by the distinctive keloid scarification down the forehead to the bridge of the nose. The traditional variants of Urhobo masks are representations of Edjo forest spirits, and are worn by young men at ceremonies. It is unusual in possessing a striated beard reminiscent of Teke pieces. The patina is exceptionally glossy and regular.
The Urhobo are one of many tribes that live in the Niger River Delta, and are generally restricted to the northern and western parts of this large area. Their near neighbours are the Isoko and Ogoni, which whom they share various stylistic traits. This is an elegant and interesting African mask.
