Dated 18th century. Mounted in an 18 Karat Gold Rin
During the eighteenth century the wealthy classes became fascinated with the art of the ancient world. This passion was equal to the love the Italian nobility had for their own past during the Renaissance, with men like Lorenzo the Magnificent commissioning works based on classical models. In eighteenth century Europe the allure of ancient Greece and Rome touched many aspects of the nobility's life, including their jewelry, which enabled them to wear the past and enjoy romantic myths and legends. This lovely intaglio shows the goddess of war Athena with her trademark emblems of spear, shield and helmet. Though she was a warrior, Athena had her cultured side too, as patroness of the arts and literature. The delicate engraving on this intaglio captures the essence of two remarkable periods in history-- alive with invention, beauty and romance, left behind in works of art such as this beautiful ring for its new owner to enjoy forever.
