The shape of this extraordinary vase is elegant and serene, but the decoration is unsettling, even shocking. Propped on either side of the neck are two creatures (perhaps monkeys, though they seem somehow human) with prominent male and female sex organs. They clutch at their bellies with screaming expressions of agony on their faces. What fatal liquid did this vase contain that brought on such a violent reaction? Was it a poison which these poor creatures are warning us not to drink? Or was it perhaps a love potion that has bound these two together forever, unable to live with each other or without.
