This genuine Ancient Byzantine gold coin has been mounted in a modern 18 karat gold ring.

The career of Constantine VII is a perfect example of complex 'Byzantine' politics. Re was co-ruler (Augustus) with his father Leo VI (886- 912), and co-emperor under his unc1e Alexander (912 - 913). Even after his uncle's death Constantine had to share power first with his mother Zoe, then with Romanus Lecapenus the commander of the fleet. Romanus' three sons-- Christopher, Stephen and Constantine were made co-emperors; and for a time, Christopher actually had precedence over Constantine VII. But in 945 he saw his chance and deposed the Lacapeni in a swift action which left him sole ruler for the first time at the age of forty. This gold coin shows Christ facing, wearing nimbus (holy crown), and pallium (mantle), raising His right hand in benediction. On the reverse is Romanus I (with short beard) and Constantine VII (beardless), both crowned and holding between them a long patriarchal cross. This beautiful coin captures the true flavor of the times, an age that was both steeped in piety and lavish in ceremony.
