Within the Nayarit style the sub-group known as Chinesco presents a type of figuration of highly refined abstraction. The beauty of such figures as this lovely example is derived from its symmetry and balance; with its protruding hips, narrow waist and flattened head. These elements combine perfectly to create an effect of solidity and intense presence. Around the waist is a broad white band, across the chest a bold X, which stand out dramatically against the orange-red slip. White touches continue on either side of the nose and on the earlobes. Two short slits suggest arms and seem 'natural' in a geometric sense in conjunction with the sloping shoulders and straight sides. There is a strong fertility 'feeling' from this figure, and it may have been made to partake of rituals of procreation. In any case its very human presence is enhanced by its abstract nature, attesting to the artist's skill, and that indefinable element which makes art fascinating.
