Born near the Danube River in the 250's AD, Galerius was someone who might be called a barn soldier. He quickly distinguished himself as bath brave and resourceful, and rapidly rose in the ranks. He became praetorian prefect under the emperor Dioc1etian, to whom he was deeply loyal. On the establishment of the tetrarchy Diocletian proc1aimed him Caesar (293), and married Galerius to his daughter Valeria. From then on he was engaged in numerous wars defending the empire in the east and west. This beautiful bronze" coin shows the proud warrior after he achieved the rank of Augustus A.D. 305. He wears a laurel wreath, and the legend encircling him reads: IMP. C. GAL. VAL. MAXIMIANVS P.F. AVG. On the reverse is genius standing left. It was believed each person possessed their own genius, or divine duplicate who was barn and died with the person. From the time of Augustus, the cult of genius Augustii, double of the living emperor, became an important element in Roman ruler cuIt. To wear this pendant revives the glorious days of ancient Rome, worn by someone who possesses their own genius.
