For thousands of years, kings and emperors have adorned their coinage with symbols of power and majesty. This token, minted by the emperor Franz Josef during the light of the Hapsburg Dynasty, continues in that long tradition. On one side, the emperor is shown wearing state robes, carrying the orb and scepter; on the other, winged angels support a coat of arms topped by an imperial crown. Such a coin evokes the glittering splendors of Vienna, the last golden moment when Europe teetered on the brink of the modern age but still looked to its glorious past.
