This magnificent little statue--probably copied after a larger work--evokes the graceful strength of the warrior god Mars. He wears a splendid crested helmet and typical Roman armor while leaning on a now vanished spear. Though we see him here in a quiet moment of repose, we sense that just beneath the surface lurks a tremendous, untapped power. At any instant he might leap into action.
