With a wrinkled and furrowed brow, unkempt hair and long beard, this portrait applique follows the general rules for the depictions of philosophers in ancient art. Highly animated and highly detailed it could be that this applique is depicting one philosopher in particular. Around this time portraits were beginning to become more individualized, and when compared to other ancient examples it would seem that this bronze head is of Plato, arguably one of the most influential and important philosophers of all time. He gazes downwards in deep thought, his eyes fixed in the distance. The moulding of the surface is particularly fine, as can be seen in the details of the beard and hair. This is a truly unique and incredibly interesting piece.
