This figure has a lustrous red slip decorated with zones of black paint, outlined in engraving. The zones may represent body painting, tattooing, or jewelry. A sense of dignity and sculptural monumentality is conveyed by the Buddha-like pose, which may be a ceremonial posture or perhaps an ancient Yoga-like posture. Symbolically, to breathe is to assimilate spiritual power. Yoga exercises place a particular emphasis upon breathing. He looks as though he may be teaching his subjects 'proper rhythm' of breathing. In an ancient world where one lived moment to moment with the rhythms of the universe, Yoga exercises would seem quite natural and the perfect way to assimilate spiritual power.
