This so-called "frying-pan" censer was used for the burning of incense, mainly on ceremonial occasions. The perfectly formed "pan" is decorated with a burnished red slip. The extended handle is a conical hollow, which contains ball rattles. At the point where the handle is attached to the bowl, there is modeled a male head. The head shows a strong and determined looking face, possibly a god for whom the incense would have been burned. L. 30cm(11 3/4IN)
