This earthenware bowl is made from reddish clay under a waxy orange-red slip. It is of a rounded form, with a thumbed rim, and rests on three hollow gourd shaped legs. Appliquéd in three places, are bird heads with button eyes and incised features. The bird’s wings and feet are incised, as are the feet of the vessel. The vivid, attractive coloration and the decorative qualities of this bowl draw the eye immediately to it. It is only after careful reflection, however that we can appreciate the inspiration for such an artifact, and feel closer to the craftsman who created it.
