This beautiful seated woman is a terracotta fertility figure that was held in high regard in many tribal cultures. She sits with her legs directly in front of her with her hands directly on her hips. Her polychrome decoration is all over her body. Her face has a simple band around the eyes as if she was wearing a mask, and she wears a simple headpiece. The geometric patterning on her body is surrounded with a black outline, creating rhythm to the decoration. Though fertility symbols were an important component of ancient life, and thus made in large quantities, they each contain their own uniqueness and individuality. Each is designed to the specifications of the artist, with his own ideas in mind, though their powers were equally important. Today, fertility symbols are not used, yet we can appreciate their importance in a society that was built around the idea of growth and procreation.
