The bold and beautiful designs on the body of this figure are repeated on the bowl, held between the person's thighs. The shoulders extend very far, in perfect alignment with the hips, giving the impression of strength and support for the hands, which grip tightly onto the bowl's rim. Triangles and squares in red and black are enclosed in broad bands, unconnected with each other, which provides open areas and gives the impression the patterns are like textured fabric. In fact, they represent tattooing or scarification of someone probably of the elite classes, as indicated by the large earspools. Despite the simple lines used to delineate the eyes, there is considerable expression, and even a sense of pleasure in the work the person is doing. It is a matter of speculation what this vessel was designed to contain, perhaps used in ritual ceremonies involving offerings of liquids contained in the vessel. Because of its superb artistry, the purpose of this object has changed over the centuries from a functional vessel to a true sculpture and work of art.
