Human effigy vessels often depict figures in unusual poses with marked abstract elements blended with realism. Artistry, invention and adherence to certain stylistic formula are well represented in this intriguing vessel. The figure is seen leaning slightly back with one leg extended and the other turned downwards at a point to give stability. Most prominent is the swollen belly with the surface area plain, except for a red circle depicting the belly button encompassed by a semi-circular black line. An elongated, stylized arm drapes over the chest, while the other rests on the right thigh. The expression on the face is nicely ambiguous, showing either pain or pleasure, or perhaps the initial effects of a soothing drug. This person may be a pregnant woman who is in a posture suitable for giving birth. We might speculate a healer to hold a mixture used to aid women in labor used this vessel. If so, it would have acquired a certain 'magic' of its own. Whatever its original use, its 'magic' as art still remains, and will continue to shine for centuries to come.
