Four whimsical figures hold this shallow bowl with both hands and with the support of the back of their heads. All four figures have the identical crosshatched body tattoos, flat ceremonial headdresses and bracelets. Even their wide bean-shaped eyes and open mouths have the same expression. Noses, mouths and ears are painted orange. Their legs are bent at the knees as if the weight of the bowl is very heavy to support. Fingers and toes are painted black which is seen throughout Costa Rican art. The lower rim that supports the figures contains jaguar motifs. The outer sides of the bowl contain an alternating "cross" and an interesting almost hieroglyphic design motif. The entire inside of the bowl has been painted with orange slip. Certainly this bowl was used for ritual purposes and is rich with mythological symbolism. It is a treasure from the past that lures our consciousness to another time and place full of mystery and magic.
