The shaman was a very important figure in the culture of the Ancient Costa Ricans. They were able to cure the sick, foresee the future and give advice and wisdom to the questions of the tribesman. This object d'art is a wonderful rendering of a shaman in mid dance. He is most probably performing a ritualistic activity for the betterment of the tribe. He is covered in traditional tribal patterns and is holding a symbolic relic in his left hand to help with the proceedings. The face is rendered with a mystical expression. The eyes are wide opened and the mouth is in a pout. The lips are highlighted in red while the eyes are painted in black to enhance the seriousness of the activity in which he is performing. He is crouching down and the arms and hands rest upon the upper legs. The top of the head is opened in order to put inside the vessel ritualistic contents. The workmanship is expert in its rendering and captures the importance the shamans had in the Costa Rican culture.
