Without a written language we must depend upon visual imagery to tell us about a vanished culture. Occasionally an object appears from the mists of time that speaks very clearly. This marvelous woman immediately captivates our interest. She asks for our complete attention, and is rewarded with a careful scrutiny of her remarkable qualities. Her posture is provocative enough, with hips spread wide and hands planted firmly on her thighs. There is no doubt she was made to be part of one of many fertility cults, which flourished around this period. Despite her pose there is nothing lascivious or improper about her. The sculptor has succeeded in the very difficult task of revealing the mysteries of fertility through the clever use of triangles and circles. Her eyes are perfectly round orbs matching the large earrings. Circles are continued in her breasts and the extended navel which acts as the focal point of two inverted triangles; ear rings to navel / navel to knees. Painted circles on her legs, arms and top of her head further illustrate the circle as symbol of the life cycle and womb; with the triangle as symbolic of communication between earth and heaven. Though she was intended for a serious purpose, she is nonetheless very alluring and will always excite attention!
