Though not typical of traditional Yoruba sculpture, the boldness and elemental beauty of this pregnant female speaks directly to us. The extended belly predominates, balanced by thick legs and feet that are turned slightly inwards to give greater stability. Arms are extended behind the back at the elbows, with hands resting on the hips. The woman's head is tilted to the left; her expressive eyes are coffee-bean shape, her hair formed by two separate striated conical portions with an open space down the center. Three vertical lines on the cheeks are distinctive Yoruba scarification. By extending the head forward and feet inwards the sculptor has managed to give the impression of animation to the figure, as if she has just stopped for a moment to rest. Humble, yet proud this woman stands for the most basic of human conditions--a symbol of fertility, motherhood and courage.
