These coins cover most of the 4th. Century A.D.; including the great emperor Constantine I and his two sons Constantius II and Constantine II. It was Constantius II who had Julian imprisoned. Fortunately, his life was spared and in 355 he was restored to imperial favor and given the rank of Caesar. He governed Gaul (France) with great success, and when his troops revolted against Constantius, they proclaimed Julian emperor. He was noted for his considerable literary attainments and especially for having preferred old pagan religion to Christianity; a belief his uncle would not have approved of. Valens is the only one not a member of the Constantine family; though he does playa role in having been co-ruler with Constantine I in 314.
