The exact function of this odd but charming device is uncertain. It seems designed to be grasped like a teacup between the first finger and the thumb, and perhaps supported some form of light like a candle. The rather startled, wide-eyed features of the little face adorning the horizontal ring seem to be searching for approaching dangers. We can imagine this intriguing object held tightly by a participant in some ancient, long-forgotten ritual; the warmth of their hand lingers about it still.
