An ancient Egyptian blue faience amulet of a squatting baboon. Depicted squatting on his haunches, the tail curving forward around his right side, his fur stippled and voluminous, his animated face with circular eyes and an elongated snout, on an integral plinth, a suspension loop at the back. Baboons were mostly associated with the god Thoth and the Moon. Faience was a favored material for Egyptian amulets, which were magically protective charms worn or carried on the body. Amulets were sewn or wound into mummy wrappings to protect the deceased from otherworldly perils.
