The ocarina, a simple whistle, is both a joy to hear and a pleasure to look at. Created out of red clay, the design of the crocodile is simple, while still properly shaped to be functional. The holes on either side are to change the tone of the music, while the tail acts as the mouthpiece. The scaly decoration on the back of the ocarina is suggestive of the thick skin of the crocodile, as is the long nose and wide mouth. There is only slight painted decoration on the ocarina, allowing us to focus on its functionality and design. Pieces such as these are very delicate, and that it was able to survive the ravages of time is indeed fortunate for us, so that we too can explore the mysteries of the past.
