Ocarinas are the musical instruments of the New World and are found in high-status tombs. This suggests use for the ritualistic and ceremonial activities. This charming armadillo ocarina is one of these special objects of the ancient world. The armadillo may represent a very symbolically important animal to the Costa Ricans. There are some noticeable qualities about this artifacts design that capture its uniqueness. The shell is depicted more like a turtles shell and it has four finger holes cut into it. Joining the hind legs and hallowing out the center giving this ocarina a tripod style base made the blowhole. The armadillo has been beautifully rendered in a realistic pose. The ears are perked-up and the eyes wide open. There are deep incision lines that define the nose and mouth as well as the feet.
