This woman stands on and ovular, openwork lattice pedestal decorated on top with an incised flower. The woman holds a bowl of Kola nuts in one hand and a hoe-shaped instrument in the other. These two attributes suggest she might have an allegorical meaning similar to the idea of “mother earth.” However though, this sculpture is most notable for its unusual styling and almost horrific features. Most noticeable is the woman’s distended mouth that arches forward as if a trumpet or horn. Her prominent arching brows frame her almond-shaped eyes and give her face a heart-like appearance. Her fabulous coiffure is more typical of Senufo art with its high central crest that trails off into a spiraling braid flanked by smaller crests that merge into flowing braids. She wears woven fabric coverings around her neck, above her breasts, and across her waist. The pattern of these textiles has been intricately rendered including the tassels that dangle off her skirt. Perhaps the oddest features of this sculpture are her conical breasts that project out of her chest at and angle and her unusual navel. She appears pregnant and fabulous relief decoration surrounds her protruding bellybutton that appears to be shaped like a fishtail. This decoration either represents keloid scarification or else is another piece of fabric that covers her swollen stomach. Clearly this is a woman of important stature within Senufo society. Yet she appears almost not to be human. Her striking features and symbolic attributes both suggest that this does not represent any earthly persona but instead is an emblem or symbol in itself. Surely she represents fertility and abundance, both of the earth and of the female gender.
