The art of the Senufo tribe is traditionally one of the most popular styles of African art. The graceful contours of their sculptures and the abstract forms of their masks inspired the works of modern artists such as Braque, Modigliani, and Picasso. This male figure stands in a typical Senufo posture with his legs spread apart, knees slightly bent, and his arms resting alongside his belly. Furthermore, his facial features also bear the characteristic signatures of Senufo art including his narrow chin, protruding mouth, and his inverted T-shaped nose with arching brows. The crested cap he wears with two side flaps that cover his ears is frequently depicted in Senufo art. So who is this man? Most likely his is a commemorative ancestral figure commissioned by the family of the deceased in order to honor their fallen relative. It is also believed that, through such a sculpture, the family can maintain contact with the spirit of the deceased who possesses the supernatural ability to influence the daily lives of the living from beyond the grave. It is also plausible that this figure might represent a memorial to a royal persona. While the exact meaning of this sculpture remains hidden from our Western conscious, we are more than able to appreciate its aesthetic qualities and marvel at its superior craftsmanship and beauty.
