A headdress surmounts this mask containing a seated figure in the center with arms outstretched to support two vertical columns. This figure, whose bottom half is like a pedestal, has a small head upon which is a tightly fitting peaked 'cap' extending over the ears. The finely carved features of the face express a sense of calm with the large almond-shaped eyes, thin pointed mouth, tiny ears, symmetrical nose and three vertical lines in a row on both cheeks representing scarification. A double ringed chain is attached to the under part of the chin and has an abstract inverted head at the end. The Baule use their masks in a variety of ritual ceremonies dramatizing village life. This mask was intended to be hung on a pillar or wall, as perhaps a protective device against spirits.
