All remnants of the distant past are romantic, however Ancient Maya civilization has a special fascination, for it is a "Lost" civilization whose secrets lie deep in the mysterious tropical forests. It is a civilization with, among other attributes, an extraordinary array of monumental art and architecture, a complex writing system, an elaborate body of astrological science and a variety of occupational artisans whose creativity was extraordinarily sensitive to the world around them. Nowhere is this insight more artfully expressed than in this sculpted limestone statuette. Here we see the seated figure of an old man whose elbows rest sentimentally on upraised knees. At the same time, his sunken-cheeked face gazes reminiscently at the world through deep, hollow eyes. With a toothless old mouth he endeavors to express himself, wanting to reveal his life's Myriad experience to any and all who will listen. Perhaps if we take the time to listen to some of the secrets of the Maya will magically unfold, through the sagely spirit of this venerable old man.
