Today, this small sculpture appears to be a child’s toy, sort of an ancient action figure. You can just picture a child posing the attached, jointed arms. The figure is fairly androgynous, wearing ear ornaments, a necklace, and a fancy hairstyle. However, the looks of this mysterious figure are deceptive to modern eyes. Our first impression could not be further from the truth. Found inside a tomb, buried next to a fallen ruler, this sculpture clearly played an important role in the afterlife. Perhaps it is a guardian to accompany the fallen into the next world. Perhaps it is a memorial of a relative to watch over the deceased. What appears to be rather trivial to us is instead imbedded with a potent energy and magic that transcends time and life itself. This figure has seen the other side and has returned unscathed to reveal its secrets from beyond.
