The summit of the classical age in Ancient Mesoamerica was reached by the Maya in their great temple cities. In those temple cities, great artistic expressions such as murals and sculptures flourished. It is during this classical period in which artists refined their skills to represent the human forms, deities, and other symbolic art works. Used in various rituals and ceremonies, their art embodied rich symbolism, laden with complex meanings, which largely remain esoteric. This magnificent sculpture is of a seated man holding a small cup. He is seated in a cross-legged position with his head lifted upward slightly. The orange surf ace of the sculpture is beautifully rich, and his distinct Mayan features such as the heavy lidded eyes, the hooked nose, and the fleshy lips are very impressionable. He is elaborately decorated with large earspools, bracelets, a pendant, and a long loincloth, which portray Mayan hieroglyphs. He also has a small jar decorated with beads on his head. Moreover, his arms and chest are incised with glyphs; he was possibly a high priest in midst of a ritual. Maybe he is holding a special ritual offering, or maybe he just consumed a magical potion, which induces prophetic visions. This Ancient sculpture radiates with dignity, pride, grace, and its unique beauty. Most likely a ritual offering itself, this sculpture embodies the importance of the Mayan religion to its people.
