There are two registers of design framed within elaborate linear borders. At top and bottom of the whole are two ladder patterns separated by triangles. In the middle are two ladders with diagonal rungs separated by three straight rulings. Both registers are filled with contest scenes. Above are three separate contests: hero pulling lion from bull, hero succouring bull with bearded human face. Below are two scenes: hero pulling lion from bull with smaller bovine behind, the hero being a bull-man; hero succouring two bovines. There is one filler: a lizard and a tree as terminal.
This is a rare type of cylinder seal commonly called a Trans-Tigridian, from northern Mesopotamia, most likely to the east of the Tigris. and dating c. 500-300 BC. They are normally of fossil shell, and mostly this has deteriorated. This seal is large and in good condition for this type.
