JB.1223. Ewer, hammered raised and engraved decorated brass sheet. Polygonal upward opening body, resting on a splayed foot-ring, recessed and bent shoulder with polygonal flat top, cylindrical neck with a collar at its lower part and repousse lion on two sides, terminating in rising straight and partly covered spout. Simple handle with arose-bud thumb-piece. The polygonal body carries two epigraphic bands, one around the base and one below the shoulder; the central part of each side displays a rounded vase-shaped medallion decorated with peacocks; small roundels decorate the shoulder, while on its flat top there is a third epigraphic band, written in cursive style over scrollwork. The upper part of the handle has a deeply carved Kufic inscription, interrupted by large punched-dotted circles. Iran, probablyKhorasan, late 12th – early13th century.
