Inkwells are amongst the finest objects associated with writing in the medieval Islamic world. Inkwells would have been worn by officials and scholars, suspended from a belt at the waist. Most examples, like this one, have three suspension holes through which cords would have been strung. The inkwell is small and cylindrical with a knobbed lid. The surface of the body is incised with geometric patterns.
