With a rim painted the deep orange of a tropical sunset, this magnificent bowl was created for the tomb of a Mayan noble. In its tondo is the figure of a standing man in an elaborate ceremonial costume. As he bends and sways to a music he alone can hear, his costume twirls about him. Does he dance for pleasure, or to appease some long forgotten god? As we gaze upon his eternal dance, we are reminded of what a lively place the past really was, full of color, noise, and movement.
