The elaborate hairstyle and jewelry suggest that he is a person of rank, perhaps a chieftain or a warrior. Impressive out of all proportion to his acutal size, he very likely was buried in a tomb to represent a living individual. Like a participant in an ancient funerary ritual, he holds a bowl in his lap, an eternal offering of food for the deceased. As we gaze upon him today, it is like viewing the faded but intriguing photograph of someone who lived long ago.
