Established tradition, ritual formula and artistic innovation each contribute an element in the creation of art; particularly when related to cult objects. The central image of this remarkable sculpture is a very finely carved face peering from within a hood. It offers an expression of tranquility and reverence, with eyes that seem both closed and open, a delicate nose and mouth with the lower lip covered. The surrounding hood or shroud is embedded with a variety of objects including cowrie shells, a modern ring and kola nuts; i.e. items of value in Yoruba society. Intended for placement on an altar the bust may represent a deity, or more likely, and ancestral image. The thick patina of sacrificial offerings attests to its having been regarded as a sacred object, and highly revered.
