To the Ancient Costa Ricans everyday objects may also contain magical properties. This delicate metate was carved from a single block of stone and used to grind kernels or seeds for flour. However, placed in a tomb it acquired a symbolic power in the transformation of rebirth and a new life cycle. The two worlds of life and death are linked- a bond between animal, human and spirit life. The Costa Ricans as the most powerful animal in the world regarded the jaguar. This noble creature, formed here, as an integral element of the metate, stands firm against all opposition, either in the material or spiritual realm. For an artisan to create a work that is both functional and mystical is truly a marvel. HT. 24.5cm(9 5/8IN): L.69cm(27IN)
