The finely crafted detail and very expressive features of this handsome mask demonstrate this point. It is similar to the Bombo masks used in initiation ceremonies. The contrast of rounded forehead with sharp cheeks and chin is very dramatic in effect. As is the oval shaped mouth painted white. The multiple holes around the eyes are characteristic of the Lulua mask makers, which lends the object a mysterious, otherworldly aspect. Masks have long been used as an "instrument" of transformation, giving the wearer a supernatural character that then can be used to impress and amaze - especially impressionable young boys during their initiation.
