Masterfully carved from a single piece of volcanic rock with only stone and wood tools plus abrasives, this engaging masked figure is a splendid example of the ancient Pre-Columbian sculptural artistry of the Atlantic Watershed zone of Costa Rica. Standing with legs slightly bent, this dynamic warrior holds the attributes of war. In his right hand he clutches a shrunken trophy head, proudly displaying it for us, while in the left hand he holds his indispensable weapon of war, a double-bitted axe. The fierceness of this figure is further emphasized by bold mask he wears--a striking image of a jaguar head, complete with jutting jaw and sharp fangs. Around the warrior's neck hangs a necklace composed of a long horizontal bar with hanging vertical elements, possibly representing the jade tubes found in this part of Costa Rica. A spectacular three-tiered headdress crowns the warrior figure, adding yet another element of a drama and excitement to this electrifying image. A magnificent rendering of three-dimensional form, this masked figure captivates us as we experience his power and energy, a spirited force that truly befits his feline visage.
