Expertly carved from a single piece of volcanic rock with only the use of stone and wood tools plus abrasives, this ceremonial seat is a remarkable example of the sculptural skills of an Ancient Costa Rican culture. Projecting from the seats cylindrical base, we observe the fantastically realized image of an alligator head, whose elaborate crest is positioned over a more realistically, rendered snout. Alligators were revered animals in Pre-Columbian Costa Rica, highly respected for their incredible strength and tenacity. Here we see those characteristics displayed in a most captivating manner, as we experience this extraordinary alligator in his entire electrifying splendor.
