The idea of protecting the tribal community was extremely important at this time and statues representing their power and strength were not uncommon. As if to ward off evil spirits, statues would be made to discourage the enemy. This statue is one of these pieces. The upright stature of the piece is the first sign of the function of this statue. Though the anatomy is simple, musculature is shown with carving along the chest area, right into the gray, volcanic stone. For further intimidation of the enemy, the figure is entirely nude, discarding the natural timidity of the human spirit. No decoration is required for its function, yet the hair is carved in a very intricate fashion. As a whole, the statue successfully warns potential enemies of its presence, while maintaining the grace and elegance of a work of art.
