This piece resembles an Akan goldweight in many respects but the facial morphology is uniquely Dogon. The Dogon of Mali are among the finest craftsmen in Africa. They live on the Bandiagara escarpment and are unusually skilled in the smelting of metal, as well as woodcarving. This is likely to represent an ancestor, as much of Dogon ritual behaviour is based around the veneration of one's antecedents, both real and mythical.
