He started his career as a restaurer of art objects and of antiquities.
Quite early in his life he became very interested in glass artefacts to the point of being the first to rediscover and to re-apply the ancient and rather complex technique used by the Syrian glass manufacturers of the 13th and 14th century, which implied the use of multicoloured enamels and gilding.
