In the cultures of Southern Peru, magnificent tapestry weavings such as this were used as burial shrouds for the nobility. This superbly woven example radiates an aura of regal dignity and worldly power. The condor motif further supports the idea that this piece was woven for an aristocratic patron, for this largest of Andean birds was considered a symbol of fierceness and strength. Against a dark background, colored birds appear alternating red on white and white on red. A border of bird motifs flanks the tapestry above and below. The bold colors and elegant patterns make a timeless appeal to the senses. As we admire this splendid textile, we share our pleasure with those for whom it was created centuries ago.
