This enigmatic object is most reminiscent of a Jaba or Koro figural cup, although the precise style and mode of manufacture makes this attribution less than certain. It is a long piece with a slightly wider “body” narrowing to a slender neck and a block-shaped finial decorated with a grotesque human face. This is surmounted by the torso or a figure, bearing a load upon its head with both hands upraised. Unusually, the piece is partially clad in metal plates, as well as a dark patina.
These pieces – named gbine – are for the ritual consumption of palm wine. They are usually carved by the Koro, but Jaba versions also exist. Gbine are used during annual ancestor rites and during second burials. Palm wine or millet beer would be poured from the cup-like shape that forms the central abdomen of the figure, to libate memorial pieces, offer sacrifices and for oublic display. The shape of the piece is hardly conducive to easy drinking, indicating the non-secular nature of these rare pieces.
This is an attractive piece of African ritual paraphernalia.
